Happy Belated 8th Birthday, WWE! (About 4 months late)
You know, I’ve never been very good at remembering birthdays. Frankly, every year I still ask my mom what exact day dad’s birthday is, and they have been divorced since I was 10 years old! (And I’m a ripe 33 now, you’d think I’d have gotten the memo in three decades.) This being said, it should come as no surprise that I have never remembered to celebrate the birthday of this little food blog, which is now pretty much in it’s tween years!
In July of 2005 a couple of crazy kids, a brand new dslr and a piece of humboldt fog cheese all collided and, in near-spontaneous combustion, exploded to create What We’re Eating. (The food blog you happen to be reading, in case you magically ended up here by mistake while searching for something completely random like unicorns or Rachel Ray.) If you go back to the very beginning of the website you will no longer find the original commentary that used to grace the pages along with the teeny tiny photos that were acceptable on the net back in the mid 2000s. Nope, those dialogues between former WWE’ster/co-founder, Tyler, and myself had to promptly get deleted as soon as we realized strangers (and family members) were visiting the site. It was far too raunchy and expletive-laden to pass by anyone’s eyes other than our own. Now all ya get is the pictures from back then.
Over the last 8 years this blog, and some of you old timers, have seen me graduate from a long winding road through university at LSU; uproot life in Louisiana and move to San Diego with Tyler; end that majority-of-a-decade long relationship and meanwhile write a book/go on a book tour; uproot life again and move to Puerto Rico; and finally, start the process of running my own professional kitchen in the tropics. (Phew! Has it really only been a little over 8 years?) What We’re Eating has been here with me through a lot of major life events and I am such a bad parent that I’ve never even once celebrated its birthday. This post is for all those birthdays momma missed, my little Dubster. (Don’t laugh at it’s pet name.) I know it doesn’t make it up for all 8 years but it’s a start, right? And if you have been coming around here for all or a good chunk of these last 8 years, thank you so much! I know I go dormant when life leads me astray, but I always come back and it’s great to have you guys here when I do. <3 PS – to celebrate WWE’s birthday about four months ago, you guys should all go make the killer peanut butter brownie pie featured in the pic at the top of the page. It’s a keeper. 😉
