Spicy Chicken Panang Curry

Sawaddy Thai Restaurant

Spicy Chicken Red Curry
Eater rating: 3.2 / 5  3.18
Tonight we picked up Thai food from a little place in San Diego, Sawaddy. We ordered spicy vegetable panang curry and chicken red curry- our usual. Just for a change of pace we got a side of springrolls.

A: well… my first thought after eating tonight’s meal, is that we have become quite spoiled as far as curry expectations are concerned.
T: That’s true. We would have been thrilled with tonight’s meal a couple of months ago. But tonight we were disappointed.
A: We were indeed…like your mom said, you really couldn’t differentiate between which was panang and which was just the red curry. they were damn near the exact same. the only thing that i really liked about tonight’s meal was its spice level! they definately got the “very spicy” part of our order right!
T: even I thought it was a touch too spicy. It would have been good with some lassi, but as it is… let’s just say tomorrow morning will be a painful reminder of all that pepper.
A: heheheh i have to admit, that tomorrow’s painful reminder does nothing to diminish my enjoyment tonight. i thought the spice level was right on. it was the definately the best aspect of the meal.
T: yes, you are a bit insane. I used to be crazy like that, but nowadays, in my old age, i’ve softened up a bit. My digestive track can’t handle pepper like it used to.
A: hehehhe old age huh??? i’m gonna remind you of that next time you call yourself young (when calling me old). yer but a ripe old 24, still huh? My digestive track hasn’t really changed as far as the amount of spice it can handle…yet.
T: You’re lucky. I hope your bowels stay strong. 🙂 About this thai restaurant, I think my favorite part of it is its name. Every time I read it I think it says “Sawdaddy’s.” Heheh, the idea of a thai place called Sawdaddy’s cracks me up.
A: heheheh no doubt.. the sad thing is, i can never actually remember what the real name is, and only remember sawdaddy’s (if i even remember that!) I must admit that i was WAY disappointed with the spring rolls being fried. I was looking for something light and refreshing, not something deep fried and reminiscent of an egg roll. but… what can you do?… but eat it and be happy.
T: eat, be happy, and *bitch*!
A: WOOO HOOO… i do love a good bitch-fest every once in a while.
T: yeah, I guess that’s what this post is all about. Even Mom was bitching. She said it was so spicy that she had to get up and eat bread in the middle of the meal. She was upset that the two curries were essentially identical, and she added that the rice was such a pile of mush that they should consider using Success Rice. She rated the meal a 3/5.
A: that is SOOO low for your mom… if it is decent she normally gives most things a fairly high rating, but not here. Heheheh, i think she even said that she could make better rice, and she sucks at making rice. 🙂 I give this meal a 3.2/5. It was just alright. the spicy level was nice, considering we didn’t think they were going to change the spiciness from how they normally serve it. The veggies were crisp, for the most part. but there really was nothing above par from this meal. San Diego offers too many Thai options to settle for something as half ass as this.
T: agreed. It was just alright. If we lived within walking distance of that place, it might be another story, but as it stands I’d be content to never go there again. Oh my, the thought of living in that neighborhood is frightening. Please tell me we will never live there, Amanda!
A: heheheh don’t worry tyler… WE WILL NEVER LIVE IN THAT NEIGHBORHOOD. it just has no flavor and everything looks and seems like everything else.
T: Yes, even the street names are terrible… stuff like “Executive Way” “Corporate Drive” or the worst, “Cubicle Street”
A: lol! i’m pretty sure i haven’t seen “cubicle st.” but i wouldn’t doubt that it exists! just think t, if we lived in that neighborhood we could walk to “wired: cafe bistro” everyday.
T: oh no you didn’t! Hahaha, we have this running joke about how I hate cafes and bistros, so Wired: Cafe Bistro is the most terrible eatery ever. Both a cafe and a bistro. I don’t really hate cafes or bistros, but in my experience places that call themselves either of those two things tend to have weak food offerings. I’m always skeptical about ordering food from them.
A: but you can’t judge a restaurant by their poor name choice…. or can you? Anyway, I am *so* excited about what we’re doing for lunch tomorrow afternoon!
T: If I were in town that I was unfamiliar with, and presented with the choice of eating in a cafe or eating in a restaurant, I would choose the restaurant. I think 9 times out of 10 that would give me the better culinary experience… now, if I wanted *coffee*…
A: i definately agree on that, cafe=coffee not cafe=food. silly americans.
T: there is much in the way of sillyness. So, what were you saying about our lunch tomorrow?
A: we will be visiting the much awaited Extraodinary Desserts (again in celebration of having a job) I said we would visit this establishment as my treat whenever i became gainfully employed again… hence our visit.
T: Now, if you can judge a restaurant by its name, Extraordinary Desserts should be the bomb, yo!
A: no doubt, homes! i simply cannot wait!
A: they offer humbolt fog in their cheese selection too! yum….
T: Sweet! We’ve had humbolt fog before! I remember it being quite extraordinary.
A: oh yeah.. tomorrow is destined to be a good day.
T: Um, for sure. So, now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for… drumroll please
A: and the rating is…..
T: I have to give our Thai experience tonight a 3.34/5. We’ll have to do better next time. 🙂
A: until then…

Kwaherini mabibi na mabwana!
